Duel: Porpora and Handel in London

Handel and Porpora were considered exceptionally original in their aesthetic choices, each admiring the other's music. Their rivalry in Britain produced some memorable scores within a few years, including Handel's Ariodante and Porpora's Polifemo, operas that were performed simultaneously in the city's theatres. The tussle between the two companies gave composers the opportunity to meet and discover each other, to take an interest in public taste and to experiment with new ideas. This CD attempts to capture the essence of a complex intellectual relationship, offering eloquent examples of the composers' styles and highlighting the boundaries of the mutual esteem held by these two giants of music history... On her first solo album, the talented young mezzo-soprano Giuseppina Bridelli bravely interprets the difficult pages written for some of the most famous singers of the eighteenth century.
