A Shakespeare Fantasy

Program: arias, duets, symphonies from operas and masques by H. Purcell

The meeting of Shakespeare's theatre and Purcell's music led to the creation of masterpieces of musical theatre such as The Fairy Queen, Timon of Athens and The Tempest. These 'semi-operas' or 'masques' offer highly original, colourful and baroque worlds. Seemingly heterogeneous works, these great frescoes reserve moments of rare poetry in which all the complexity and richness of Shakespeare's work are clearly apparent. In perfect osmosis with the poet, Purcell composed musical interludes of rare inventiveness that leave listeners with an impression of great freedom.
