Scarlatti, Il Martirio di Sant’Orsola

Program: Il Martirio di Sant’Orsola d’Alessandro Scarlatti

A unique and unpublished manuscript! Il Martirio di Sant’Orsola was probably written and sung in Rome between 1695 and 1700. The identity of the author of the libretto and the circumstances of its composition remain unknown. The manuscript score and its separate parts, preserved in the Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon and restored here, are in fact the only European version of the work. It was copied for the Académie des Beaux-arts de Lyon, to which it belonged, probably by amateurs bringing back numerous works from their transalpine travels, as shown by the importance of Italian music in Lyon's collections.
