Pergolesi, Stabat Mater

Program: Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and traditional Neapolitan polyphony

Today's visitors will be amazed at the extent to which musical and religious traditions continue during Holy Week in Naples and the surrounding area. Processions and festivities of all kinds accompany the religious services in a popular atmosphere where the sacred and profane merge happily. Sacred and popular music mix, as well as secular music such as tarantella sung for hours on end on church squares, while services take place just a few metres away. To immerse us in the special atmosphere of this religious festival, Le Concert de l'Hostel Dieu has chosen to combine Pergolesi's Stabat Mater with Neapolitan polyphony and tarantella, heard and recorded during Holy Week in Naples and the Apulia region. The ensemble is based on a manuscript source preserved in the ancient collection of the Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon.
