Fury, Madness, and Virtuosity of a Baroque Hero

The vast epic poem by Ludovico Ariosto Orlando furioso [Roland furieuxhas had a profound influence on the history of art, and particularly on music. Vivaldi’s and Handel’s operas about this multifaceted dramatic character are well known, but those by Steffani, Fux, and Porpora remain too often overlooked…

“For me, Orlando also symbolizes the contemporary human being in perpetual motion. All the characters—but especially Orlando—have a goal to reach, something to discover. Orlando runs, flees, is constantly in pursuit of the object of his desire. He does not know how to appreciate what he has and throws himself into a frenzied cycle, relentlessly seeking what will bring him happiness, wealth, and peace. The Knight pours all his energy into chasing this illusion. He gets lost in his utopia, where the real and the unreal merge, as if to justify the emptiness that drives him to never be satisfied. Illusion and reality clash, and madness seems the only way to ease the pain. Thus, our program can also be seen as a journey into madness, which penetrates the inner being to reveal its mechanisms.”
