Halfway between traditional and learned music, O'Carolan's imaginary world lies at the crossroads of Irish dream literature and the poetic universe of Purcell and Shakespeare. On his travels, he discovered the works of prominent Italian musicians, such as the violinist Geminiani. As a result, his music often reflects two worlds that seem to be at odds. Perfectly illustrated by the song The Fairy Queen, inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream, O'Carolan's music reflects his various and changing moods: lament for a dead friend, nostalgia for a lost love, the enchantment of a fleeting dream or the festive atmosphere of a tavern!
