During the next musical season we will have the great pleasure to
celebrate our 15 th anniversary with you! It will be the occasion to
share a musical adventure made up by discoveries and unreleased
interpretations of the great opuses of the baroque repertoire. Those
two complementary approaches have been the raison d’être of the Concert
de l’Hostel Dieu since its beginnings. We draw our inspiration by
musicological search that have led each one of our works and we will
try this year above all to give to each meeting a well-defined musical
identity; both coherent and unique. After a trilogy dedicated to the
Italian cities (Roma, Venice, Naples) during the three last years, we
propose to discover this year the influence of Italian baroque music on
the Enlightenment’s Europe and more specifically in France. Six
compositors, widely inspired by the transalpine style, will be our
guides for this year. Campra and Bouzignac, as two representative
musicians of the cultural richness in the French provinces, will show
us through two programs of sacred music the quintessence of their
creativity. Two well-known figures of the East-European baroque art,
Bach and Charpentier, will allow us to appreciate the variety and the
richness of their opuses for choir. Then two “globe-trotters”
(O’Carolan and Santiago de Murcia), representative of a mixed and
open-minded culture, will make us discover their repertoire: the first
one influenced by Foscarini and the second one by Corelli. This
imaginary travel through Baroque Europe will be the occasion of
original artistic collaborations: the group Garlic Bread, The young
dancers from the “Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse”
(national high school for music and dance) in Lyons, L’ONCL E !
(National Bagpipes’ Orchestra of Lyons and around) will be our partners
to explore the many links between learned writing music and the
traditional one.
I hope those projects will make you want to join us for this musical anniversary-season.

Jesu, meine Freude
La quintessence de l'art choral
The theme of the “Gute Nacht” as poetic metaphor for a gentle and
peaceful death to the one who believes in God goes through the opus of
the “Cantor from Leipzig”. According to J-S Bach light and relief are
offered to the hopeful one, at the end of an exhausting life. Thus his
motets, “Sterberlieder”, aren’t dark or painful pieces of music.
Lightening architectures full of Italianism, each one of those great
choir-frescos are build around a central choir. It reflects the deep
feeling that Bach pass on God. Two cantatas for alto come in between
the motets in order to bring the necessary breath to this program full
of virtuosity

Midnight Mass and Magnificat by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. A great traditional and popular concert for Christmas .
In the 17 th century, in France, there is an extensive repertoire which traditionally has accompanied the liturgy during Christmas time. Close to the writing repertoire, these popular songs inspire to the compositors of the Big Century many of the most brilliant opuses. The Midnight Mass gets its originality out of this mix. In deed, Charpentier found his inspiration in eleven popular songs which he adapted to liturgical texts. That forms a very coherent and expressive set. Thus songs such as “Joseph est bien marié ( Joseph is well married ), “Laissez paître vos bêtes” ( Let graze your animals ) or “Une jeune pucelle” ( A young virgin ) bring their naivety and their youth to the learned polyphony. That creates a both joyful and peaceful climate proper to Christmas time

The unlikely meet between the Gaelic music and the baroque worlds…
Musical compositions by Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) : Tunes, Jiggs, laments, reels
“ Carolan’s Dream” presents original arrangements of compositions by Turlough O'Carolan, an Irish harpist and poet. Between traditional music and learned music, the dream world of O’Carolan stays between Irish fantasy literature and the cosmopolitism of the English occupants. We wish to highlight this cultural duality, this mix of inspirations and references. The music of O’Carolan reflects his changing temper: the wailing on a deceased friend, nostalgia of a lost love, enchantment of a fleeting dream…But above all it reflects this theme of “dream”, this inner regard, this quite mad introspection that the artist has unwilling often did since his teenage. Broken fate, hopeless fight for a better life, constant wandering, that only a sensitive person like O’Carolan could transform into an amazing quest with only one purpose: the pursuit of grace.

The musical mystery of the French 17 th century
Concert directed around the Christ’s life and death. From holy scenes, dramatic motets and dialogues by G. Bouzignac. (Ecce Homo, Dum silentium,...)
The very personal and creative style of the master from Narbonne is as itself a mystery. Between Spanish and Italian influences, Bouzignac compose a music that is free from the rules of the Renaissance. Those “pictures in music” make from the various events of the Christ’s life a captivating and expressive musical fresco. Unfortunately his fame fades away at the end of the 17 th century. But he stays in the minds of the musicians of the 18 th century as the “great music writer from the French provinces” .

The mixed and visionary world of a globe-trotter.
Dances by Foscarini and Santiago de Murcia
(Folias, Jacaras, Fandango, …)
In Spain of the 17th century, we sang various dances and we danced as well a lot of romances “with such a grace” that ”anybody who listened it, held its senses and spirit spellbound”. The Clergy considered these exuberant dances as the “obscene work of the Devil”, as they were so lustful and suave. This profane taste for the provocative dance caused the righteous indignation of some, whose protestations had only to make those dances more popular as a consequence. At the same time, those dances get richer and richer thanks to the influences from the New World colonies and from West Africa. As a symbol of this mix, Santiago de Murcia is guitarist-compositor with a “free imagination”: his manuscript on the dances from Spain and the New World, recently found in Mexico, points up the extremely modernity of the work of this traveller-musician. He has been inspired both by the dances from Old Europe and by African and South-American rhythms.
The choreographic creation by Anne Martin, former partner and soloist by Pina Bausch, is inspired by this unbelievable mix, both shock and union of cultures.

Requiem
Funeral high-mass from Provence with sequences in “plein-chant” (Dies Irae, Libera me, Benedictus), procession and tambourines from Provence.
After a tactfully symphony in F major, the choir emerges slowly like a stream of belief. There is in this choir such as in the rest of the piece something very “frenchy” like in other Requiem from nearer periods: for example those by Fauré or Duruflé. It has been certainly composed for Notre-Dame de Paris but we would to restore the piece as if it came from Provence. It allows us to imagine the reconstruction of a funeral mass such as it was in the 18 th century in the south of France. The processions and tambourines bring their joyful and popular counterpoint to the lightening polyphonies by Campra.
