Quickly the few musicians gathered around the initial project developed it into a real professional ensemble. Those young singers and instrumentalists, who came from the CNSMD (High School of Music and Dance) in Lyons, set up the roots of the ensemble. “Le Concert de l’Hostel Dieu” was born at this time and was soon to move on to more ambitious projects in the area around Lyons and in France. The Choir set up in 1998 and recently I created “L’Atelier Vocal” (vocal workshop) with young professional singers. Those two vocal groups has became from year to year undisputable assets for the ensemble. Thanks to them we could enlarge our repertoire to oratorios, operas and other great baroque masterpieces. From the beginning our repertoire has turned to Italian music: a natural option to any music lover aware of the history of Lyons. Indeed Italy has always inspired and fascinated the city of Lyons as we observe it with the architecture in the historical centre of town. As far as music is concerned, the shelves of the bookcases in Lyons are mostly occupied by transalpine manuscripts: Scarlatti, Stradella, Corelli, Carissimi are more present than Campra, Rameau or Mondonville. Those latter composers nevertheless visited Lyons in the 17th and 18th century. This rich heritage allowed us to restore and produce an unreleased repertoire. Thus the Concert de l’Hostel Dieu has build from year to year a large repertoire made up by quite unknown oratorios, operas, cantatas and motets. Today, our choices of programming and interpretation often remain under the influence of this fascination exerted by Italy: both through the discovery of unheard versions of master pieces or the enlightening of beautiful pages by unknown compositors considered as “little masters”. Thus, you’ll can be led to choose between the version of few motets by Mondonville written in Lyons and the charming and unheard cantatas of Stradella, or else the surprising motets composed by Guido and the Stabat Mater of Domenico Scarlatti. A few unheard versions are coming to complete this corpus such as this version of the Stabat Mater of Pergolesi for soprano, baritone and choir found in Lyons or else this lonely manuscript of Il Martirio di Sant’Osola by Alessandro Scarlatti. But our most fervent wish consists in going further in sharing with you our passion for the discovery or the interpretation of these rare or unheard pieces in this brilliant baroque French-Italian repertoire.
