Céline Scheen

Soprano

Céline Scheen grew up in the village of Plombières near the German border, and from the age of five she took part in the rehearsals of the local church choir, directed by her father. From 1991, she studied the flute and singing in Annie Frantz's class at the conservatoire in Verviers. A year later, her teacher sent her to the RTBF programme "Jeunes solistes", in which she reached the finals. After her studies in Verviers, she continued at the Conservatoire Royal de Mons in Marcel Vanaud's class, where she won First Prizes in Concert Singing and Opera Singing.

In 1998, she was awarded the "Nany Philippart" scholarship at the Queen Elisabeth College of Music and continued her studies for two years in the class of Véra Rosza (1917-2010) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Véra Rosza discovered her talent and her vocal character suited to early music.

In 1999, Céline Scheen recorded the music for Gérard Corbiau's film Le roi danse for Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft with the Musica Antiqua Köln ensemble conducted by Reinhard Goebel.

In 2002, with the Ensemble Clematis and under the direction of violinist Stéphanie de Failly, she took part in the recording of two CDs devoted to composers from the southern Netherlands: Nicolaus a Kempis and Carel Hacquart.

She has performed in numerous operas, including several productions conducted by René Jacobs and Philippe Herreweghe. She is regularly accompanied by early music ensembles such as Musica Antiqua Köln, Il Fondamento, the Ricercar Consort, Café Zimmermann and La Fénice under Jean Tubéry.

In 2010, Céline Scheen began working intensively with Christophe Rousset and his ensemble Les Talents Lyriques on opera and concert programmes. At the end of 2012, she sang Venus in John Blow's Vénus et Adonis with Les Musiciens du Paradis conducted by Bertrand Cuiller, a show premiered at the Théâtre de Caen.

She is currently working on several concert projects with Christina Pluhar's Ensemble L'Arpeggiata.
